Comfort Centres

Comfort Centre is a facility that is used for residents who are Sheltering In Place and remaining in their homes during an emergency but do not have full services such as electricity, heat, and water. Comfort Centres are intended to provide: a place to go to get warm/cool; light refreshments; charge electronic devices; provide updates; community gathering point; and washroom facilities. Comfort Centres do not provide overnight accommodations.

REMO works with the comfort centres to share the best practices, advise of risks, and provide guidance to assist when the operation is required. Although REMO is not responsible for the operation of the comfort centres, REMO plays an active role in tracking the opening and closing of a comfort centre to share with the Provincial Coordination Centre and share opening and closing times with residents when the information is provided.

Residents need to be aware that the comfort centre closest to them may not available and many comfort centres are in a Fire Hall and the firefighters may be utilized elsewhere. Be prepared by knowing several comfort centres near you in case the nearest one is not open.

Emergency Shelter

Emergency Shelter is a facility opened at the request of the Lunenburg County Regional Emergency Management Organization in a large-scale emergency and is operated by the Canadian Red Cross, under the direction of the Department of Community Services. An Emergency Shelter includes providing personal services, accommodation and can include psycho-social services.

Find the Comfort Centres and overnight Emergency Shelter near you, please review the list below or view the Google Map locations. The closest Comfort Centre may not be open when you need it as they are staffed by volunteers and resources may be used elsewhere. Know the locations of nearby comfort centres and add the facilities and addresses to your emergency kit.

Comfort Centres are managed and staff by the local facility. During an emergency, REMO asks Comfort Centres to advise of their opening and closing times so the chart can be updated with accurate information and shared with residents.
